TONSILLITIS


definition
Inflammation of tonsils is often a result of a viral or bacterial pharyngitis.
1. 10% to 15% of cases are caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci.
2. Tonsils aid in protecting the body from infection.
B. Assessment findings
1. Enlarged, red tonsils; fevers
2. Sore throat, difficulty swallowing, mouth breathing, snoring
3. White patches of exudate on tonsillar pillars; enlarged cervical lymph nodes
C. Nursing Diagnoses Related to Tonsillitis
• Acute pain
• Hyperthermia
• Deficient knowledge
• Risk for deficient fluid volume
D. Interventions
1. Comfort measures and symptomatic relief:
a. Cool mist vaporizer
b. Salt water gargles, throat lozenges
c. Acetaminophen
2. Antibiotics for bacterial infection, usually penicillin or erythromycin
3. Surgery: removal of tonsils alone or with Adenoids
